Future Leaders in Cancer Research Prize

The Future Leaders in Cancer Research Prize recognises individuals who have completed their PhD within the last ten years and have demonstrated the potential to achieve world-leading status by producing international quality research.

The successful recipients of this prize will have produced international quality research, and demonstrated ambition and aspirations consistent with the potential exhibited by current world leaders at that stage of their career. Up to three awards will be made per year.

What is covered

The recipient will receive an honorarium of £10,000, a commemorative trophy, and free attendance at the NCRI Conference where the presentation ceremony will take place.

Eligibility

  • On 31 May of the year of the award, candidates must be within ten years of having been awarded their PhD.
  • Candidates must have produced international quality research outputs, a significant proportion of which should arise from work performed in the UK
  • Candidates cannot nominate themselves.
  • There are no restrictions with regard to the race, gender, nationality, religious or political views of a candidate
  • Candidates need not be in receipt of Cancer Research UK funding, or have been supported either directly or indirectly by Cancer Research UK.
  • The Prize is presented to an individual investigator.

Funding value

£10,000 - up to three awards will be made per year.

How to apply

To nominate, the following materials must be submitted:

  1. A nomination letter which:
    • Must be written in English and include a statement of no more than 300 words, summarising the candidate's research accomplishments that have led to this nomination.
    • Must specify the Prize which the candidate is nominated for.
  2. A completed application form that includes a summary statement of no more than 2000 words, describing the research accomplishment(s) of the candidate as well as the significance and impact of his/her research. Publications supporting these contributions may be directly referenced within the text.
  3. Two letters of support from experts in the field, at least one of which must come from outside the candidate's institution. These can be included with the nomination form or sent directly to Cancer Research UK at the email address below. The names of the referees should be included in the nomination form.
  4. The candidate's CV, including a complete list of their publications.

There is no restriction on how many candidates can be nominated by an individual scientist. There is also no restriction on the number of nominators writing nomination letters or signing a single nomination letter on behalf of a candidate.

Nominators are asked to maintain the confidentiality of the nomination process.

Nominations must be submitted electronically to prizes@cancer.org.uk.

Paper nominations will not be accepted. A nomination should not be considered submitted until Cancer Research UK has issued an email confirming this. Confirmations will be sent within five working days.

Please note that the deadline is final and we cannot accept nominations after 5 p.m. on the day of the deadline.
