NAEDI Research Call

The National Awareness and Early Diagnosis Initiative (NAEDI) was initiated by the Department of Health in England and is being developed as a UK-wide initiative to promote earlier diagnosis of cancer and thereby improve survival rates and reduce cancer mortality.

Through NAEDI and under the auspices of the National Cancer Research Institute, a consortium of funders have come together to develop a nationally coordinated portfolio of high quality research projects in raising awareness and early detection of cancer. Contributing partners include the following:

Calls 1 and 2: Remit and Awards

The first NAEDI response-mode Call was announced in December 2009, with the second a year later. The remit of these Calls aimed to address research in the areas where gaps were identified from the evidence published in the special supplement of the British Journal of Cancer. More specifically the Call focused on research in the following areas:

  • Higher risk populations;
  • Public awareness of cancer symptoms and reasons for late presentation;
  • Health services; and
  • Methodology for, evaluation of, early detection and awareness research.

In Call 2, the funders strongly encouraged the submission of proposals on development and evaluation of:

  • Computer-based decision support systems; and
  • Models, tools and approaches to improve cervical and bowel cancer screening uptake.

These were broad-based Calls that mobilised most of the early diagnosis research community. Applications were received from a very broad cross-section of disciplines including health economics, social science, epidemiology, and health services research across the UK.

Ten projects were recommended for funding in each of the Calls. Awards are in the form of project grants with a maximum duration of three years.

Future Calls

A formal evaluation of the impact of the projects funded by the previous two research Calls will take place in Autumn 2012 and the results of this will inform the timing and remit of any future calls. As such, a third funding Call will not be issued in 2012.
