Research Bursaries for clinicians and professions allied to medicine
This scheme is for you if you are looking for short term funding for a period of research prior to considering a higher degree. The scheme aims to encourage clinicians, nurses, healthcare scientists and allied health professionals to be freed from clinical duties in order to pursue academic research.
Academic Clinical Fellows (that is, those funded through the NIHR Integrated Academic Training Pathway in England and Wales) can also apply for funding to support consumables costs whilst undertaking a period of research. In Scotland, this bursary is suitable for holders of Clinical Lectureships who have not registered for a PhD/MD.
The next deadline is 17th August 2012.
What is covered
Funding of up to £25,000 is available for a period of up to 12 months. The funding can be used to cover the applicant's salary or research expenses, or a combination of the two.
Research Bursaries can be used in a variety of ways. The funding could be use to:
- enhance your understanding of research before deciding whether to pursue PhD/MD studies
- obtain preliminary data before applying for a PhD
- experience work as part of a research team for a short period without committing to become an academic clinician
What is not covered
Research Bursaries cannot be used for the following:
- To support applicants who have already completed a PhD or MD
- To fund Masters courses
- To support the costs of research that will contribute towards a PhD or MD, or to provide salary costs for applicants who have already registered for a PhD or MD (eligible candidates should consider applying for a PhD directly)
- To support applicants who already hold a fellowship to allow them to undertake research, except those holding NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowships or equivalent (see above)
