The Cancer Research UK Science Funding Committee has established a new scheme which will provide five years of funding to new, non-clinical investigators who have just taken up their first Higher Education Funding Council (HEFC) funded post in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. The purpose of the award is to encourage the best new investigators to develop a career in cancer research, and to provide the core support required to enable successful applicants to establish their own research groups.Applications will be subject to peer review and will be competitively judged by the Science Funding Committee.
Subjects covered
Applications are invited from those with interests in any aspect of Biomedical Science (including biology, chemistry, physics, maths), providing the applicant is able to explain the relevance of their proposal to cancer research.
Eligibility
Applicants must:
- Hold a position at a UK university which is fully funded by the relevant national higher education funding council by the time of grant activation (Career Establishment Awards cannot be used to fund part of an applicant's salary).
- Be within 3 years of the start of their first academic post at the time of application.
- Be the sole Principal Investigator.
Period of funding
Funding would normally be provided for up to 60 months.
Value
The award will supply funds for one junior post-doctoral position and one research assistant or technician, as well as running expenses which may include a supplement for the applicant's own bench costs. A separate amount can be requested for equipment (up to £25,000) and also for animal costs.
The award cannot be used to fund a PhD studentship.
