The Biological Sciences Committee (BSC) is responsible for the oversight, development, review, funding and management of a portfolio of research Programmes and Projects focused on the basic understanding of cancer.
The Biological Sciences Committee considers applications in the following areas:
- Cancer genetics, genomics and genetic epidemiology
- Cell and molecular biology of cancer
- Immunology
- Tumour biology
This excludes clinical trials and research programmes/projects falling within the remits of the Population Research Committee and the Clinical and Translational Research Committee and its sub-Committees, and research which is primarily focused on drug discovery, imaging, surgery or radiotherapy.
The Biological Sciences Committee also oversees the funding of Career Establishment Awards and the Large Equipment Scheme.
Applications are judged on the basis of scientific excellence, innovation and relevance to cancer research. The Committee meets three times a year and assesses all applications on the basis of their scientific and strategic importance, whilst also studying the expert peer review which is collated for each grant.
