Applications for the China Fellows Programme 2008 has now closed. For next round of applications: the deadline for UK host's project submissions is October 2008; applications from Chinese candidates will open in December 2008.
Background
Cancer Research UK is the leading supporter of cancer research in Britain and the largest fundraising medical research charity in Europe. We support a broad portfolio of cancer research across all the biomedical disciplines and we fund over 500 research groups in British Universities and Medical Schools, as well as in our own Institutes.
Cancer Research UK has run a China Fellows programme since 2005. This annual competitive scheme enables outstanding young Chinese postdoctoral researchers (both non-clinical and clinical) to obtain a further three years of postdoctoral training in leading cancer research centres in the UK. Successful applicants have been appointed to many of Cancer Research UK's core-funded institutes and other research groups since its inception three years ago.
See a list of current China Fellows and the projects and locations they have been placed with.
Objectives
This programme will serve a number of objectives:
- to provide Chinese scientists with a three year postdoctoral training period to develop skills and international experience
- to allow Cancer Research UK investigators to recruit well-trained, highly motivated and very able postdoctoral and clinical fellows
- to ensure UK researchers engage with the best science around the world
Current format of the programme
UK research groups will be invited to take part in the programme by submitting their research projects. Abstracts will be displayed on our website and Chinese applicants will be apply to the project by submitting an online application.
All applicants will be assessed by our selection panel and placed with the research projects which best match the applicant's research background
Eligibility
Applicants will have shown exceptional promise in their early work in a cancer-relevant field. They should have a PhD, preferably within the last five years, in a discipline relevant to cancer research from a leading Chinese University.
Applicants must be competent in written and spoken English. Applicants have to be based in China during the application period. Chinese scientists currently living outside China are not eligible.
Cancer Research UK is aware that there might not be many existing training opportunities in China in some areas of cancer research, for example, scientists who wish to pursuit a career in epidemiology and population-based medical research. Applicants are interested in developing a career in this research area but who have a different cancer-related research background would not be disadvantaged. In this instance, applicants are required to justify the reason why they would like to make such a change and provide evidence that they have prior interest in this field.
Location
Host research groups include those at the Cancer Research UK core-funded Institutes in Cambridge (the Cambridge Research Institute), Glasgow (the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research), London (the London Research Institute), and Manchester (the Paterson Institute for Cancer Research). Many other Cancer Research UK-funded research groups are also eligible hosts.
