Population Research Fellowships

The Population Research Fellowships provide an opportunity for outstanding researchers in population or behavioural cancer research to carry out research leading to a PhD or to develop their postdoctoral career.

Sea of people walking down the streetThe research project must be within the remit of Population Research Committee.

Applicants are considered on the basis of their academic achievements and potential, the appeal and scientific merit of the research project, the research environment provided by the sponsoring department and the availability of supporting expertise and resources.

Eligibility

There are two types of fellowships available:

  1. Population Research Training Fellowships

    • Applicants can be clinical or non-clinical researchers; or those in a profession allied to medicine who are interested in research training leading to a PhD.
    • Applicants should have at least one year's relevant experience in the field of public health or epidemiology, or a relevant MSc qualification.
    • All applicants must be eligible for registration for a PhD degree and be committed to developing a research career in this field within the UK.
  2. Population Research Postdoctoral Fellowships

    • Applicants should have completed, or be about to complete their PhD in either population or behavioural research relevant to cancer.
    • Applicants must be aiming to gain post-doctoral experience, with the ultimate aim of building their own independent research group.
    • Applications from previous holders of Cancer Research UK PhD Studentships in Cancer Behavioural Research or Population Science are particularly welcomed.
    • Applicants should have no more than three years of postdoctoral research experience at the application deadline.
    • This fellowship is not open to clinicians. Clinicians seeking to undertake post-doctoral research should apply for a Clinician Scientist Fellowship.

Candidates of any nationality may apply but must intend to pursue a career in the UK. Please note that student fees will be paid at the level for UK/EU students.

Location

These Fellowships cannot be held in the Cancer Research UK core funded Institutes in Cambridge (the Cambridge Research Institute), Glasgow (the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research), London (the London Research Institute), Manchester (the Paterson Institute for Cancer Research), or Oxford (the Gray Institute for Radiation Oncology and Biology).

All other Cancer Research UK-funded research departments or units are eligible locations, as are most university departments in the UK. However, there are a number of locations that are not eligible, and applicants should contact Cancer Research UK prior to application to ensure that their selected host institution is acceptable.

Research Support Available

The Fellowships is awarded for three years and provides a personal salary, running expenses, equipment funding and fees (where appropriate) for the duration of the fellowship.

Cancer Research UK will expect basic equipment to be provided by the host institution but requests for essential specialised items may be made, provided they are fully justified.

Application Procedures and Deadlines

The deadline for receipt of applications is Wednesday 26 August 2009.

Short-listed candidates will be invited for interviews in December or January. Funding will be available from 1 April 2010.
