Career Development Fellowships

This Fellowship supports outstanding non-clinical scientists at the start of their independent careers.

Fellows will have shown special promise in their initial studies in a cancer relevant research field, but may not yet have sufficient experience or the track record to obtain a more senior Fellowship.

The Fellowship provides the opportunity to set up an independent research group for the first time.

The fellowship provides:

  • the opportunity to establish an independent research group;
  • 6 years' support;
  • salaries for the fellow, a post-doctoral researcher and a technician;
  • consumables costs;
  • equipment;

Applicants will have a strong publication record. Applications are considered on the basis of the applicant's academic achievements and potential, the scientific merit of the research proposal, and the research environment provided by the sponsoring department.

Studies on a wide variety of organisms and model systems has greatly benefited the understanding of the molecular basis of cancer and subsequent the development of new treatments. Therefore, proposals from applicants with interests in any aspect of science with the potential to generate novel insights into fundamental biological problems relevant to cancer are encouraged.

Eligibility

Applicants will have at least three and no more than six years of postdoctoral research experience at the time of submitting the preliminary application.

Applicants are expected to demonstrate the promise of becoming future research leaders and will have a good track record in their previous work.

These Fellowships are intended to provide researchers with their first chance to establish independence. Applicants must therefore not have had a prior opportunity to develop a research group (for instance, by having been awarded another fellowship or being appointed to a tenured or tenure-track position in a university or research institute).

Fellows are expected to work independently of other laboratories in the host institution, and to demonstrate the ability to lead a research team and direct a programme of work. However, it is anticipated that Fellows will wish to develop collaborations with others within the institution.

Fellows will be expected to have the status of a Group Leader or equivalent.

Location

The Fellowship cannot be held in the Cancer Research UK core funded Institutes in London (the London Research Institute), Manchester (the Paterson Institute for Cancer Research), Glasgow (the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research), Cambridge (the Cambridge Research Institute), or Oxford (the Gray Institute for Radiation Oncology and Biology).

Most university departments in the UK are eligible locations. However, there are a number of locations that are not eligible, and applicants should contact Cancer Research UK prior to application to ensure that their selected host institution is acceptable.

Research Support Available

The Fellowship provides funding support for a period of six years. The Fellowship will provide a competitive salary for the Fellow, a post-doctoral worker, technical assistance (i.e., a technician, a post-graduate research assistant or a scientific officer), research expenses and an equipment grant to set up the laboratory.

Review

The Fellowship is subject to a review after three years, with continuation dependent upon satisfactory progress.

Application Procedures and Deadlines

These fellowships are run as an annual competition. An invitation for the submission of applications will be advertised in May 2010, and the application form and guidance notes will be available on our website at this time.
