Clinician Scientist Fellowships

The Clinician Scientist Fellowship provides four years' support for clinical researchers who wish to develop their research skills and make the transition from doctoral research training to an independent clinical-academic investigator. The fellowship is potentially renewable for a further four years, allowing the fellow to start to develop their own research group.

The key features of this scheme are:

  • four years' support for clinicians that hold a PhD or MD
  • an opportunity to gain postdoctoral experience
  • an opportunity to combine specialist training with research
  • possibility of renewing the fellowship for a further four years

Applications must be cancer orientated and contain a rigorous research focus.

Applicants will be considered on the basis of their academic achievements and potential, the appeal and scientific merit of the research project, the research environment provided by the sponsoring department and the availability of supporting expertise and resources.

Joint Fellowships

In addition to the standard Clinician Scientist Fellowship, Cancer Research UK has partnered with the Royal College of Surgeons of England to offer a joint Fellowship to encourage trainees in Surgery to develop a clinical-academic career. Applicants for the Clinician Scientist Fellowship in Surgery should indicate this on the application form.

All applicants for the joint Fellowship must be Members or Fellows of the Royal College in good standing.

Research support available

These Fellowships will provide:

  • up to four years' funding
  • the Fellow's salary
  • salary for a research assistant or technician
  • running expenses and equipment

Fellowship renewal

Fellows will be able to apply to renew their fellowship for a further four years.

Eligibility

Applicants will have a good record of success in their first research fellowship or research career and will be seeking a clinical-academic career combining research and clinical practice. Applicants must remain clinically active during the fellowship and spend at least 20% of the fellowship in clinical work.

Preference will be given to applicants whose proposed research project has arisen directly from problems identified in their clinical practice, or where the results of the laboratory research could be applied directly in their clinical work.

All applicants should hold a specialist training post or have obtained their CCT, and should have received their doctorate by the time they intend to take up an award. Those who have not already completed their specialist training should have clear plans for doing so at the time of application, and all specialist training plans must be approved by the appropriate Royal College and host institution. Applicants should normally have no more than two years postdoctoral research experience at the time of application.

Candidates of any nationality may apply but should normally have been resident and working in the EEA (European Economic Area) for three years immediately before application and intend to pursue a clinical academic career in the UK.

Location

These fellowships can be held in any Cancer Research UK institute, department or laboratory. Applications to work in some non-Cancer Research UK laboratories will also be considered. All applicants should contact Cancer Research UK prior to application to ensure that their selected host institution is acceptable.

Application procedures and deadlines

The fellowship scheme is now open. The application forms and guidance notes can be found at the top right hand side of this page. The deadline for applications is Friday 8th January 2010.
