Applications for the Collaborator Bursary for 2009 have now closed.
What are Collaborator Bursaries?
The Bursary provides funding for:
- Applicants for their travel and research expenses to support themselves or their team members (e.g. postdoctoral scientists, research assistants, etc.) when visit a collaborating research group (in the UK or overseas);
- Applicants to alternatively, invite their collaborator to visit their research group;
- Collaborating visits of between 1 to 6 months duration;
- Collaborating visits which have specific benefits to an already Cancer Research UK funded project (e.g. introducing a new technique, performing a distinct piece of work).
Who can apply?
All applicants must ensure that their proposed work fits within the remit of our Research Strategy.
Applicants must be Cancer Research UK researchers receiving long-term support, that is:
- Group leaders in receipt of core institute funding;
- Principal investigators on programme grants and within direct-funded units;
- Senior Fellowship holders;
- Career Development Fellowship holders.
PhD students are not eligible to apply.
Key features of the Bursary
Outgoing
For supporting the applicants or their team members (postdoctoral research fellows or research assistants) to visit a collaborating research group:
- To learn a new transferable technique or to perform a distinct piece of work that cannot be accomplished in the originating institution.
- This training will contribute to an existing Cancer Research UK funded project when the visiting person returns to the UK.
- To provide funding (maximum £6,000) for travel and subsistence allowances, and research expenses during the visit.
Incoming
For inviting a collaborator (or his/her group member) to visit the UK research group:
- To allow expertise or technology to be introduced to a Cancer Research UK funded research group and its research projects.
- To provide funding (maximum £6,000) for travel and subsistence allowances, and research expenses during the collaborator's visit.
What does the Bursary not cover?
- The bursary will not pay the salary of the applicant, postdoctoral scientist, research assistant or the visiting collaborator.
- The bursary will not pay for visits of less than 1 month or for visits which cost less than £500 (please contact your administrator at Cancer Research UK to discuss possibility of funding from general running expenses).
- Funding for more than one person from a research group in a year.
- The bursary will not support visits by PhD students to or from the collaborating research group.
- The bursary will not support visits between collaborating research groups located in the same city/town.
What are the assessment criteria?
The bursary is competitive and a nominated selection panel will make decision on which applications will receive the funding. All the applications should be beneficial to an existing Cancer Research UK funded project.
How to apply?
- Applications, if not for the applicants themselves to visit, should include the name of a nominated group member from the applicant's research group or the name of a collaborator who will visit the UK research group.
- Bursaries will be awarded to the applicant's host institution.
