"It's fantastic news that Birmingham is to be the first new Cancer Research UK Centre. Birmingham is already an excellent centre for cancer patients because of its involvement in research and its highly trained clinicians."
Alan Rooke, cancer patient from Henley-in-Arden

As the first Cancer Research UK Centre, Birmingham will set the pace for national and international progress for research into cancer genetics, gene therapy and the link between viruses and some cancers. The Centre will also focus on cancers of the prostate and bladder as well as leukaemia.
Other areas of expertise include large-scale population studies, cell biology, and cancer and the immune system. Birmingham will also become a leading centre for clinical trials.
The 'virtual' Centre is a partnership between the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, the University of Birmingham and Cancer Research UK. Collaboration is the key to the success of the Centre.
The research community here already receive funding from Cancer Research UK but becoming a Centre will increase the charity's contribution to supporting research in Birmingham to around £9m a year.
The Cancer Research UK Centres programme will enable us to implement our research strategy and achieve our vision and purpose.
