Cardiff University and the University of Wales College of Medicine (UWCM) merged their activities on 1 August 2004.
With 5,000 staff, 22,000 students and an annual turnover of £300 million, Cardiff University is now the largest university in Wales and one of the biggest in the UK. The merger, which is built on an existing strong partnership, will enhance the world-wide reputation which both institutions have for the quality of their teaching and research.
Merger is supported by a multi-million pound programme of additional investment and will directly benefit students by increasing teaching, learning, research and support capabilities, as well as providing substantial academic, economic and healthcare benefits to society.
The name of the new merged institution is Cardiff University and includes all the Schools formerly part of UWCM within the Wales College of Medicine, Biology, Life and Health Sciences.
