Director: David Harrison
Our mission in the Edinburgh Medical Oncology Unit is to improve the therapeutic index of cancer treatment. In addition to applying pharmacological principles to research the optimal use of existing treatments, we are researching the development of more selective anti-cancer medicines and studying psychosocial factors relevant to understanding how best to translate laboratory advances into more effective patient management. Our clinical research encompasses phases I/III clinical trials performed through participation in the activity of the Edinburgh Cancer Centre, the managed clinical network which provides non-surgical oncology to patients throughout the South East of Scotland. Our clinical activities are focused on patients with colorectal, ovarian, breast cancer and malignant melanoma. In the laboratory we use colon and ovarian cancer as models for the study of growth regulation and genetic control of these tumours.
