Current research
About 25 scientific staff or visiting scientists, 2 research students, and 30 research or administrative assistants work in the Cancer Epidemiology Unit. Research in the Unit is primarily concerned with the role of hormones.

Two large cohort studies are based in the Unit:

  • The Million Women Study, which recruited over 1.3 million women aged 50-64 in the UK between 1996 and 2001 with a focus on the effects of hormone replacement therapy and other lifestyle factors on women's health, and

  • EPIC-Oxford, which recruited about 60,000 people in the UK with diverse dietary habits between 1992 and 1998.

Researchers in the Unit also coordinate various international collaborations including the Collaborative Group on Hormonal Factors in Breast Cancer, the International Collaboration on HIV and Cancer, and similar collaborations on endometrial and ovarian cancer.

Professor Beral's unit also has a programme of research studies in collaboration with the NHS Cancer Screening Programmes, whose Director, Julietta Patnick, is Visiting Professor of Cancer Screening at the University of Oxford and an honorary member of the Cancer Epidemiology Unit.

Future projects
Further results from the cohort studies and the international collaborations will be published in the next few years.
