Scientific summary

The packaging of DNA into chromatin provides both an efficient mechanism to store the huge amount of DNA (two copies of the genome) in each cell but also, through the chemical marks that modify the side chains of histone proteins, it provides an indexing system that ensures that that the correct genes are expressed in a given cell type and that there is an appropriate response to environmental stimuli.
