| Advances in biological mass spectrometry have made proteomics an indispensable tool in molecular cell biology and medical research. The Protein Analysis and Proteomics group was established at Clare Hall in January 2007 with the aim of implementing state of the art mass spectrometric technologies that enable the identification of purified proteins and proteins in complex mixtures together with the identification of the sites and nature of post-translational protein modifications. The Clare Hall Facility employs electrospray ionization mass spectrometry as the key technology for both qualitative and quantitative characterisation of proteins. The principal approach for protein analysis is 'bottom-up' proteomics, where proteins are initially enzymatically digested with proteases producing a peptide pool representative of the original proteins. |
